| Bhagwati obtained a M.Sc. degree from the Jawaharlal Nehru University (India) in 1992 and Ph.D. from the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (India) in 1997. His Ph.D. work involved understanding mechanisms of olfactory sense organ formation in the fruit fly //Drosophila melanogaster//. Subsequently, he joined California Institute of Technology (USA) to pursue post-doctoral research. In 2004, Bhagwati joined McMaster University to start his own laboratory. He has received several scholarships, honors and awards for his research accomplishments.
